1st place: Bornholms Censored Spring Exhibition 2023
Longlist: Jackson’s Painting Prize 2023
Hello, my name is Daniel John O’Rourke. Welcome to my website.
I’m a English/Irish artist living on the beautiful Danish island of Bornholm with my wife and our four children. My artwork is, without doubt, inspired by the diverse and dramatic landscapes that I am surrounded by here on this little island in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
I am a self-taught artist, having chosen to pursue a career in Graphic Design in the UK before rediscovering my latent desire to paint after moving to Denmark.
Watch a short video about me and my art from TV2 Bornholm (Danish):
I have always loved drawing and painting, so much so that art classes in school never really felt like school to me. I still get that same sense of excitement today that I did in school when I try to reproduce something I see with a pencil or a paintbrush.
I work mostly with oil paint because I like the way it looks, with its deep colours and subtle nuances that allow me to work quickly and intuitively.
Stylistically, I'm most drawn to artists who create a realistic sense of light in their paintings. There are many I could name, but artists like John Singer Sargent, Diego Velazquez, Joaquin Sorolla and Rembrandt have had a big influence on how I paint.
The most important thing for me when creating a painting is to achieve a sense of reality in the work I produce. The subject matter is also relevant to a certain extent, but I would be happy to paint almost anything as long as I can capture the light.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website - I hope you find something you like. Let me know if you have any questions: I'm happy to help. And remember that you are very welcome to drop by my gallery ‘Galleri O'Rourke’ in Gudhjem and have a chat.
All the best,
Daniel
